The Saab Spirit Is Still Alive and Well – 42nd Saab Owners Convention & Record-Breaking Museum Attendance

The 42nd Saab Owners Convention, hosted by the Saab Club of North America, took place July 16–20 in Parsippany, NJ, where enthusiasts from across the U.S. and around the world gathered to celebrate the beloved marque. Held just outside New York City, this event turned out to be one of the largest in recent Saab Owners Club history.

With 368 registered show cars and 715 attendees, it was the best-attended SOC since 1997. As SCNA president Shelly Baxter quipped during Saturday evening’s awards banquet, “Not too bad for a brand and carmaker that went out of business in 2011!” The weather was perfect, and the Sheraton’s expansive parking lot was just barely able to hold the sea of Saabs on display.

41,800 Visitors: Saab’s Legacy Lives On

The Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan, Sweden, isn’t just a collection of cars—it’s a tribute to innovation, design, and the enduring loyalty of Saab enthusiasts around the world. In 2024, the museum welcomed 41,800 visitors—its highest attendance since reopening in 2012—proving that Saab’s spirit remains as strong as ever, even more than a decade after production ended. This milestone highlights the brand’s lasting influence and the passion of a global community that sees the museum as a bucket-list destination.

A Global Passion for Saab

Since its 2012 relaunch, the Saab Car Museum has steadily grown in popularity, but the last few years have seen a noticeable uptick. While the 2024 Saab Car Museum Festival helped draw record-breaking numbers, the trend points to something much deeper than a single event. “It’s not about Trollhättan alone—it’s about the global community of Saab lovers,” says curator Peter Bäckström. From Europe to the United States and beyond, Saab’s distinctive legacy continues to captivate.

Polestar, Once the Racing Arm and Performance Division of Volvo, Now a Cool Electric Car Company

Polestar is a Swedish automotive brand from Volvo, established in 1996 as Flash Engineering, a Swedish motorsports team. It was later rebranded as Polestar Racing and was acquired by Volvo Cars in 2015. Polestar initially gained recognition for tuning Volvo gasoline-powered cars for enhanced performance, similar to "Mercedes AMG" and "BMW M Series." The company is headquartered in Torslanda, just outside Gothenburg, Sweden.

Today, Polestar operates as a standalone performance electric vehicle manufacturer and represents Volvo's all-electric offshoot brand. The Polestar 2 shares many of its EV technologies and underpinnings with the Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV.

National Car Care Month in April is the time of year to give your car some extra attention. Basic maintenance can go a long way toward improving the safety and dependability of your vehicle, plus it helps avoid costly repairs down the road. Here are some basic maintenance items you can get done:

- Oil, filters, fluids, and tire pressure check

One way to avoid a disastrous road trip is to make sure the vehicle you will be driving is running well. A 10-minute pre-trip check is a quick and easy way to help avoid the inconvenience of a breakdown many miles away from home. A pre-trip check to help ensure safety and reliability on the road is always a good idea, especially in winter.

Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake, and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
Check the hoses and belts that can become loose, cracked, brittle, frayed, or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to properly functioning the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering, and cooling system.

Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
Check lighting to identify any problems with exterior and interior lighting, as the chance of an accident increases if you can’t see or be seen.
Check wipers. Wiper blades should be replaced every six months. Make sure the windshield wipers are working properly, and keep the reservoir filled with solvent.

Swedish Saab 75th Anniversary in Trollhatten

We were fortunate to finally have the Covid travel ban to and from Sweden lifted, so both Carol and I had the opportunity to use previous canceled flights to Sweden to attend the 75th Anniversary of the Saab Automobile. You would never know Saab had not produced a car since 2011 as this June weekend in Trollhattan was undoubtedly the largest gathering of Saab automobiles at one place at one time. The weather was perfect, and the massive turnout from all over Europe was

unbelievable. Every possible spot you could park a car or double park a car was overfilled with a Saab everywhere near the Saab Museum Complex.

The museum is housed in one of the old factory buildings at "Innovatum," a science and technology center on the former NOHAB industrial estate in Trollhättan, where locomotives were once built. With the closing of the Saab Car manufacturing facility nearby and all the skilled workers left without employment, the government stepped in to take advantage of the circumstances to preserve the museum collection of automobiles and utilize their workforce to create "Innovatum," a massive Tech center and a science place for younger kids". It is a brilliant success! Sweden has gone totally cashless, drivers drive on the right and pass left, a huge amount of roundabouts, "SpeedCams" in most cities, windsocks on bridges to warn motorists of crosswinds, and of course, lots of friendly, happy people.

At 15 years old, my first real job was pumping gas, washing cars, and helping keep Andy Long's Atlantic Filling Station in Shamokin, PA, clean and tidy and, of course, putting those little "Red Balls" on our customer's antennas. In light of Swedish Motors' 40th Anniversary, we sat down with Rich Kushner to talk about the Classic Car Museum.

How did you begin your classic car collection?

I just had a love of cars and started purchasing customer cars that I liked. Then in 1989 a TVR dealer in Maryland went out of business so I purchased his remaining inventory over the period of a few years. I saw it as an opportunity and then just kept buying things I liked and it's grown to this collection.

Do you think it's a good investment to buy a classic car? Why?

Definitely, a good investment because those particular vehicles increase in value whereas the new car that you buy today from a dealer decreases in value.

What vehicle in your collection is your most beloved?

1962 Austin Healy 3000, bought in 1971.

Which is the most unique?

1977 Saab 99 Turbo - prototype, test car. Saab sent 40 of this model, 36 of which were 3 door cars (2 doors and a hatch), and 4, 2 door cars with a trunk. It still has the factory logbook and all documentation from when the car was new. This car was given to Saab factory reps to travel the country with and

show the Saab dealers what the 1978 first turbocharged passenger car for production use would be like. This is a historical vehicle and this is the only one left known in existence in showroom condition.

How ma ny cars are featured?

There are currently 18-20 cars featured, but it is an ever-rotating collection.

Are they all for sale?

Yes, kind of. There are some favorites that I don't want to give up, however, if the price is right, everything is for sale. My wife is insisting that we downsize only because we are out of storage space. Prices have increased so it is a little more difficult to buy to refurbish and re-sell. Everyone thinks that their rusty classic that has been sitting behind their garage is worth more than it is. It is best to buy something that has already been restored or slightly blemished (more valuable because they are unique).

Are there any classics you've sold that have become famous in any way?

A DeLorean and a 1972 Saab 9-8 both were purchased and are currently in museums. A 1958 Volvo 544 Station Wagon that was featured at the International Car Show in NY and now located in Volvo North America's US Car museum.

The President of Volvo North America bought a car out of San Diego a 1967 Volvo 122 Station Wagon and had it shipped to Swedish Motors where we did some engine mods, accessories, etc. for him.

A Saab 1980 99 Turbo Rally - in the late 80s he raced in the US and Canada pro rally series, was purchased by a man from Sweden, and now is in a museum in Belgium.

Do they sell locally?

Rarely, some people will fly in to pick up their cars and drive them home, but mostly we ship them throughout the US and Internationally. Most recently we have shipped them to Ukraine, California, and Arizona, most of the time sight unseen. Our reputation withholds it's self, they trust us that they are buying a quality car.

What is the farthest you have shipped a classic car?

A 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Station Wagon that we shipped to Japan 15 years ago.

How do you pick replacements?

I typically buy Saab and Volvo because that is what I know best, but we currently have 2 French Citroens. I buy cars that I like and can enjoy. People call me when they know someone that has a car through his network. Racing contacts have lingered so I communicate with them and they know what I have, what I do, and what I am looking for.

What is going on right now with the classic car market?

In the past year or two, more people are spending time behind their computers, less time going out due to the times, investing their money into vehicles because they can look at them, enjoy them and drive them with their families.

Exotic cars have been breaking records by selling in the millions, especially those owned by more prominent people (actors, politicians, etc.)

If you’re driving a late model vehicle, it's likely equipped with a direct fuel injection system. Older vehicles with conventional fuel injection systems deliver fuel to the engine through injectors located in the intake manifold. Newer vehicles with direct injection systems locate the fuel injectors directly in the combustion chamber of the engine; allowing the fuel to be atomized more effectively, resulting in increased fuel economy, power, and response. The downside to this revelation in fuel injection technology is the potential for carbon-buildup to occur. Because fuel no longer passes over and "washes" the back of the intake valves, carbon-deposits commonly form on the valve surfaces.
